Eating for a Rugby Player

One of the most important questions asked by many rugby players is exactly what and how to eat during the day. When working with the Newcastle Falcons, we have put a really simple four stage eating process in place based on how they train on a daily basis. This has formed the central piece of their nutrition strategies, off which, all snacks and supplementation is developed. Below is a simple meal matrix that they have printed on their fridges!

All the players are educated on the matrix and provided information to support each section, including example meals. Two of the most important messages provided to their players are:

  1. Don’t allow large gaps to occur in the day without food, and
  2. Lunch (the meal immediately the last training session of the day) should be the largest meal of the day
